SELF DEFENSE CLASSES FOR KIDS

If you’re a parent you already know that the world can be a dangerous place for children.  Like most parents you probably breathe a sigh of relief every single time they come back through the door and are home safe.  But when it comes to self defense for kids it’s important that you teach kids how to deal with realistic situations without making them scared or afraid of everyone.

Preparation and preparedness are the keys to teaching kids self defense.  Don’t pretend that your kids could never be assaulted or kidnapped because realistically they could. But if your kids know how to defend themselves and know how to keep their presence of mind they could successful get away from an attacker.

Some schools teach self defense to kids as a regular part of the curriculum. Does the school you send your kids to offer self defense? You should find out. Self defense training for kids is created to empower kids and teach them how to take control of the situation if they are being attacked.  You can help empower them further by drilling them in common self defense moves and testing them on the lessons that are taught in kids self defense classes.

Some of the most popular kids self defense classes and videos are the radKIDS self defense classes and Kids Fighting Chance videos.  radKIDS has been features on several major TV news programs and has more than 20 documented cases where the lessons and techniques that were taught in the radKIDS classes helped children escape from an abductor or attacked.

SELF DEFENSE CLASSES FOR KIDS

One of the reasons that the radKIDS classes are so effective is that radKIDS focuses on teaching kids to stay safe and how to size up a situation. radKIDS teaches kids to be proactive and stay in control of the situation they are in.  In addition to the physical classes where kids learn self defense techniques that can help them escape from attackers that might be much larger than they are radKIDS also has activities that parents and kids can do together that will help children learn to stay safe and also has games, quizzes, puzzles and fun activities for kids that help them learn.

Most communities offer radKIDS classes or classes like it either for free or on a sliding scale so that every child can afford to attend.  If you haven’t given your children any self defense training or if you are having a hard time figuring out how to teach them self defense without making them afraid of the world around them you should check to see where the nearest children’s self defense class is and make plans to attend.

PADDED ATTACKER CLASSES

A large number of self defense classes feature some padded attacker work but only classes that focus on “real impact” self defense training are built around students interacting with a padded attacker.  In a “real impact” style class you will learn a technique, learn the theory behind that technique, practice the technique on each other and then practice it full force against a padded attacker. This sequence is repeated for anywhere from six to thirty hours.  Intense self defense training classes can last up to six weeks and prepare students for real life situations that you might encounter during your normal life.

Padded attacker classes can be very traumatic in the beginning but by the end most students find that class has boosted their confidence and helped them to feel comfortable fighting back against an attacker. Just like with anything else the more you practice something the more comfortable you’ll feel doing it.

Practicing a groin strike or an eye jab on a mannequin doesn’t come close to simulating what it’s like to really hurt another person and to really intend to hurt them.  Many women at first find it hard to use their full fighting strength against the attacker, which is why getting padded attacker self defense training is so important.

Padded attacker self defense classes also teach you how to use your adrenaline to your advantage and how to fight your way through that first adrenaline surge. Before your body goes into a “fight or flight” state you will experience a few moments when your body just doesn’t seem to work right and you have little muscle control or coordination. That is when the adrenaline is starting to flow and you need to know how to get through that and come out of that state fighting

PADDED ATTACKER CLASSES

You’ll probably be a little bit surprised at how fierce you can be when you need to be. Many women are shocked at the strength they use to fight back against an attacker even in a simulated attack.  The confidence of knowing that you can save your own life will stay with you and that kind of confidence might someday keep you from being attacked.

During an attack most women freeze at the second they are grabbed or whenever there is physical contact with the attacker. Having a padded attacker simulate an attack and grab you can help you break through that block so that if a real attacker were ever to do it your first instinct would be to fight back instead of to freeze or panic.

Being able to think quickly and instantly fight as hard as you could someday save your life.  The only way to really prepare for that is to take at least one padded attacker self defense class.

Switching to Survival Mode

Hopefully if you are attacked the assault will never get this far.  Hopefully one of the other strategies will work and you manage to get away from your attacker before this point. However if the worst should happen and you do end up in the middle of an attack you need to know how to go into survival mode.

When you’re in survival mode your adrenaline will be pumping like crazy because you will be in the middle of being attacked.  Because of the adrenaline you will probably not be feeling any pain, which is good, but you might start to go numb or lose consciousness.

In survival mode you need to focus on staying alive, and on remembering as much about your attacker as you can.

In order to get through an attack you need to have decided already what is worth fighting for and what’s not.  If you are in a situation where you cannot get out of being attacked switching to survival mode is the best way to focus on staying alive.

If you have fought to the best of your ability and you are still about to get raped your survival instinct may tell you to submit to the rape to lessen the physical damage.

If that’s what your instinct says do it and then focus your mind on remembering details about the attacker.

What does the attacker look like? Is there a smell like cologne or cigarettes or alcohol?

What color is the attacker’s shirt?

Are there any scars or tattoos on the attacker?

  self defence for women

All of those things will help the police catch him later so any details you can remember will be important. It’s difficult to give a description of someone under normal circumstances so you should practice your descriptive skills to learn how to remember important details.

When you’re in survival mode you also may fight so fiercely that you cause serious injury to your attacker.

Think of the rage that a mother lion has if someone disturbs her cubs, that’s how you will fight when your life is threatened.

In order to use all that adrenaline fed rage effectively you will have to know how to strike your attacker in a precise and focused way.

Since it’s not easy to remain focused when your body is flooded with adrenaline the more you focus on learning deadly strikes and self defense moves the more you will be able to focus that primal rage when you are in the survival part of an attack.

When it seems like the attack is ending that is the time to fight for your life, literally, because the attacker may be getting ready to kill you so that you can’t identify him.

Learn to Diffuse a Confrontation.

This strategy works for both interactions with strangers and situations where you in danger of being attacked by someone that you know.  If you learn how to diffuse a tense situation by using words, body language, how to set boundaries, and how to practice evasive measures you can sometimes literally talk your way out of being attacked.

The most important thing when you’re learning different methods of diffusing situations is to take charge of the situation.  This is what does a lot of women in, not being able to take control over the situation. If you’re in a meeting and a client gets too close, or if you’re at a friend’s house for a party and an acquaintance won’t take no for an answer, or if you’re walking on the street and a predator approaches you knowing exactly how to take charge of the situation without being confrontational and setting boundaries gently but firmly can help you avoid being attacked.

self defence confrontation

The techniques used to diffuse a situation are really effective when you’re dealing with a spouse or an acquaintance that is threatening you or has hurt you in the past.  Diffusing that person’s anger or rage can give you a chance to safely get out of the house or call the police before you get hurt.  If you think that someone close to you could attack then these techniques can be very useful. This is especially important if the person has a problem with drugs or alcohol. When that person is drunk or high he or she is not in his or her right mind and is all the more dangerous.
